DOH-10: Normin COVID-19 immunity is now at 24%

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)–The target to get herd COVID-19 immunity for northern Mindanao is to have 3.55 million (70%) of its people vaccinated, as of now, it is already at 24%, said Department of Health (DOH)-10 Regional Director Dr. Jose R. Llacuna Jr. in a press briefing.

Llacuna said the region must meet its 70% vaccination jab to get herd immunity from the virus. This should include the two doses which is given four to six weeks apart. Cagayan de Oro City leads with 43% with provinces at 20% except for Lanao del Norte with 15.7%.

With 2.4 million doses allocated in the region, 85% are being utilized, he added.

He said vaccination is now open for 18 years and above, with no more prioritization.

“Atong gipaninguha muabot ang 70%. Daghan na bakuna available, enough to cover 70%. There is a computation of 38,000 to 40,000 jabs a day para maka-attain sa 70% this year. Last month 20,000 a day lang ang jab. Gibuhat tanan sa gobyerno. ‘Tong unang panahon, limited lang pero karon, daghan na atong bakuna,” he said.

(We are doing our best to reach 70%. We have so many vaccines available enough to cover 70%. There is a computation of 38,000 to 40,000 jabs a day to attain 70% herd immunity this year. Last month the region only had 20,000 jabs a day. The government is doing all it can. At the onset of the pandemic, vaccines were limited but now we have a lot of vaccines.)

Meanwhile, DOH-10 Assistant Regional Director Ellenieta Herundina Maria Victoria N. Gamolo shared the importance of getting the second dose of the vaccine. As they have observed, those who got the first jab, do not anymore return for the second.

“We need the second dose to develop full immunity,” she said.

She also urged local government units especially barangay captains to influence their constituents to get vaccinated and to have more vaccination sites in their area.

“Cagayan de Oro already has eight vaccination sites including malls and schools,” she said.

The department is also hiring for more medical officers. With so many who passed the recent board exam, she urges them to consider working for public service at DOH 10.

Meanwhile, Dr. David Mendoza revealed an in depth analysis is being done for the deaths of COVID-19 in the region.

He said, “96% of deaths of COVID 19 are unvaccinated. 58% of these are 60 years old up who died of other diseases and who also got COVID 19 infection.”

Mendoza continued to urge individuals to get vaccinated and maintain minimum public health standard or BIDA Solusyon to avoid getting the virus.

Meanwhile, for 12-17 years old pediatric COVID-19 vaccination, DOH-10 is still awaiting the go signal from central office to be implemented by November or December, this year. (JMOR/PIA-10)
