Friendship Dome to rise in Marawi City

QUEZON CITY – As part of government-led efforts in rehabilitating Marawi City, an outdoor sports dome is slated to be reconstructed in the Islamic City of Marawi soon.

Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) Secretary Eduardo del Rosario, who is also chairman of Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM), recently led the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement for the construction of the Marawi Filipino-Chinese Friendship Dome.

Joining him in the MOA signing ceremony were Marawi City Mayor Majul Gandamra and Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FCCCI) president Domingo Yap and TFBM Field Office Manager Felix Castro Jr.

The sports dome, spearheaded by nine Filipino-Chinese associations including the Overseas Chinese Alumni Association of the Philippines and the Philippine Overseas Chinese Federation of Industry and Commerce, will also serve as a multi-purpose hall and a venue for various indoor sports such as basketball and boxing.

To be built on a plot with 5,700 square-meter Gross Floor Area, the facility is also designed to accommodate the need for a training venue in Marawi, which was severely damaged during the five-month siege orchestrated by the Maute group in May 2017.

Located in Barangay Sagonsongan, the Fil-Chi Friendship Dome can accommodate up to 2,724 people.

Groundbreaking for the facility is slated in January 2020. In his message, FCCCI head Yap expressed delight over the project, thanking the government for allowing the Filipino-Chinese community to participate in the rehabilitation of Marawi. (CVCabajar/DHSUD)
