GCash and Island Pacific Filipino supermarket to provide Filipinos in U.S. stronger connection to loved ones in PH

MANILA, Philippines, October 17, 2024 – GCash, the Philippines’ leading finance app and largest cashless ecosystem, strengthens its presence overseas by partnering with one of the top Filipino supermarkets in the United States, the Island Pacific Seafood Market, bringing digital financial inclusion closer to Filipinos wherever they may be in the globe.

With over 20 stores in California and Nevada, the Island Pacific Seafood Market is a fixture in Filipino communities in the U.S. The partnership will equip the supermarket with GCash services such as digital payment tools and International Bank Cash-In.

“This partnership is special to GCash as we mark two momentous occasions—the Filipino American History Month, and our 20th anniversary,” G-Xchange President Ren-ren Reyes said at the sidelines of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in San Francisco. “With the growth of GCash, we are redefining financial inclusion in the Philippines—that our services should also be accessible wherever there are Filipinos.”

“There are around 1.2 million Filipinos here in California alone, 5 million in the whole U.S.  GCash hopes to strengthen the community of Filipinos in the USA and their ties to their families in the Philippines,” Reyes said.

“Island Pacific is proud to partner with the number 1 FinTech app in the Philippines through our grocery store by providing a way to do business transactions with over 1900 retailers back home. This partnership is a historic win for our overseas Filipino community!”, shared Island Pacific CEO Maite Defensor.

To kickstart the partnership, Island Pacific customers can get 500 loyalty rewards points from their first US Bank Cash in through the GCash App. This is equivalent to a $5 discount on their next grocery purchase. The promo is to roll-out to Island Pacific stores this coming October.

This partnership will promote the use of the GCash app, guiding customers through the different features and how to use the platform to provide for loved ones at home.

GCash has been accelerating its overseas expansion with new features for overseas Filipinos, such as the International Bank Cash-In which was launched in June, allowing overseas users to link their U.S. banks to their GCash wallets and withdraw from it. This is apart from other features such as sending money to GCash accounts for free and paying bills in the Philippines, such as utility expenses and real estate, directly through the platform.

Another upcoming feature is GSave, which will allow overseas users to save money using GCash, with high-interest peso-based accounts.

As GCash expands its reach, GCash officials, led by its President and CEO Martha Sazon, paid a courtesy call to the Consulate General of the Philippines in San Francisco Neil Frank Ferrer. GCash highlighted its goal to empower Filipinos in the state through better management of remittances and finances, in the vision of Finance For All.

“In our international expansion, we are guided by our goal of ‘Abot-kamay ang Pamilya sa Pinas,'” remarked GCash International General Manager Paul Albano. “It is GCash’s commitment to make financial inclusion borderless.”

As GCash celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, it is committed to bringing digital financial inclusion to more Filipinos, wherever they may be in the world.
