ILIGAN CITY (PIA) — The spirit of volunteerism and participation are alive and thriving among young people in Iligan City.
Barangay Kiwalan Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Chairperson Feliza Francisco shared this in tonight’s CORDS-X Podcast with Communications Secretary Martin Andanar.
She said one of the goals of the SK Federation of Iligan is to improve the participation of the youth not only in sports and socio-cultural activities.
Francisco, who is also the SK Iligan Federation Secretary, shared that they mobilized the youth in the relief operations of the city in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
In addition to this, the Barangay Kiwalan SK also initiated online activities to stimulate engagement from the youth during the implementation of community quarantine in the city. These include TikTok challenge, makeup competitions, and essay writing and cover song contests.
“We are also planning to organize online quiz bowl and mobile legend tournament in view of the growing popularity of e-sports,” she added.
When asked on what they learned during the pandemic, Francisco said the COVID-19 crisis taught them to be innovative to adapt to the new normal. As leaders, they also gained an understanding of how to be more compassionate and sensitive to the needs of their constituents.
Moreover, they also saw the importance of being firm and diplomatic in decision making so that the public can understand and follow the rules better.
Meanwhile, Francisco appealed to the youth sector to obey health protocols. She urged them to be active in the fight against all threats to public health and safety.
She emphasized that the youth have the responsibility of shaping the future, thus, their understanding and cooperation are crucial in this trying time. (APB/PIA ICIC)
