Jasaan, 58 IB empower youth in peace building initiatives

JASAAN, Misamis Oriental (PIA)–To further capacitate the youth of Jasaan on peace and leadership development, the Local Government of Jasaan in collaboration with the Misamis Oriental chapter of Propelling Our Inherited Nation Through Our Youth (MisOr-POINTY) and 58th “Dimalulupig” Infantry Battalion (58th IB), held its first-ever 2021 Youth Leadership Seminar with the theme: Empowering Youth Leaders to Ripple Genuine Peace-building in the Zones of Peace.

“This Youth Leadership Seminar is intended not only to inform and educate [the youth] about the true intentions of the Communist Terrorist Groups but also to help them build and develop character,” said 58th IB LtCol Ricky L Canatoy.

With over 150 participants from the various barangays of Jasaan, the youth joined in activities and lectures on the prevention of student Involvement in criminality and drug abuse, basic fire safety and quick response firefighting techniques and demonstration, gender and development, and the deceptive recruitment of CPP-NPA-NDF on the Youth Sector.

According to Canatoy, despite the challenges wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic in organizing gatherings, they have still pushed through with the activity to ensure the continued thrust in countering CPP-NPA-NDF propaganda while ensuring the adherence of minimum public health safety protocols to all stakeholders.

“We hope that by giving them this leadership seminar, several lectures on drug awareness, and other activities, they can become a better and more responsible citizen in their municipality and avoid being recruited by the deceptive CTG youth recruitment,” he added.

On their part, LGU Jasaan pledged the full support of the activity and future peace-building programs, underscoring the importance of peace and youth empowerment to the development of their municipality.

“We don’t rule by the blood of the people, dili nato gusto nang patay patay, ang atong kontra kaning mga walhon, na radicalize ang utok (We don’t want unnecessary death and violence, these communists have been radicalized). That is why I am grateful to the Army for taking the time to sit down with you and address this critical issue, orienting your minds to go the straight path of the democratic way of life,” Jasaan Mayor Redentor Jardin said.

As the strength and influence of the CPP-NPA-NDF weaken, attributed to the whole of nation approach in Ending Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC) helmed by the Duterte administration, LGU Jasaan with the support of public and private stakeholders now aims to completely purge the scourge of false ideologies in their area and capacitate its youth towards a peaceful and developed future.
