New DepEd Marawi SDS advocates for planting of 1M trees

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA) — To help mitigate climate change, newly designated Department of Education (DepEd) Marawi Schools Division Superintendent  Anna Zenaida Unte-Alonto announced her 1 million trees advocacy during the Brigada Eskwela kick-off here Thursday, August 12.

“It is my personal advocacy to plant 1 million trees to help our environment fight against climate change and see the beauty of Marawi around 5 years from now. We will be planting ornamental trees all around the city of Marawi in different schools and beyond the city of Marawi to the different municipalities of Lanao del Sur,” she said.

DepEd partnered with Rawaten Inc. and United Nations Human Settlement Programme to achieve this advocacy.

To recall, trees were already planted at the Hadiya Village in Brgy. Dulay West and Darussalam Village in Brgy. Dulay Proper wherein the permanent housing project of UN-Habitat, Task Force Bangon Marawi, and Social Housing Finance Corporation can be found.

Alonto also said that she plans to issue a division-level DepEd order that will require graduating students to plant a tree.

“I planned on issuing a division level DepEd order for every graduate, especially in elementary, intermediate, and secondary. Before they graduate, they have to plant at least one tree of their own,” she said.
