CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)–Members of the Regional Development Council-Region (RDC)-10 and its Sectoral Committees, the Regional Gender and Development Committee (RGADC)-10, as well as National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)-10 personnel gathered, March 8 via video conferencing to start the celebration of the 2021 National Women’s Month.
Consistent with the overall theme We Make Change Work for Women, this year’s observance is set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, which poses both challenges and opportunities for women.
RDC-10 Vice Chairperson and NEDA-X Regional Director Mylah Faye Aurora B. Cariño, highlighted the value of women in nation-building, while Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) Executive Director Lawyer Kristine Rosary E. Yuzon-Chavez emphasized the role that each society member plays in addressing the continuing and emerging issues that hamper women empowerment and gender equality.
The activity also featured the laban stories of EnP Angelie A. Collera, Regional Qualifier–Search for Outstanding COVID-19 Volunteers, and EnP Ma. Estrella Luz R. Peñaloza, NEDA-10. Both shared the responsibilities and realities that they embraced as women during these challenging times.
The celebration of the Women’s Month in the Philippines came into being through Proclamation No. 227 (series of 1988), “Providing for the observance of the Month of March as Women’s Role in History Month.” This was further supported by Republic Act 6949 (series of 1990), declaring March 8 of every year as National Women’s Day.
