PDP hopeful Go would reconsider, agree to run for President

PDP Laban President Alfonso Cusi yesterday said the ruling party remains hopeful that Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go would change his mind and agree to run as their candidate for President in the 2022 national elections.

Earlier, Go wrote Cusi saying that while he is deeply honored by the trust and confidence of the members of the party’s National Executive Council in endorsing him as the party’s presidential bet he has to decline.

Go said he is “not interested in the presidency.”

Replying to Go, Cusi said the NEC understands the position of the senator.

“Nevertheless, we are determined to endorse you as PDP Laban candidate for President of the Philippines in the coming National Elections,” Cusi said.

PDP Laban is set to hold its national convention on September 8 to finalize its slate of candidates for the 2022 elections.

“We earnestly hope that you will reconsider,” he added.

Cusi said the party trusts and believes in Go’s leadership qualities such as his humility, sincerity, strong political will, honesty, good sense of justice, and innate goodness, as well as goodwill towards his fellowmen, as exemplified by the Malasakit Centers he has established all over the country.

He said the traits that Go shares with President Rodrigo Roa Duterte makes him the “logical successor” as the country’s next President.

“We are steadfast in our belief that you are the best candidate to tandem with President Duterte, and that the two of you are the best pair to lead the country forward,” Cusi stressed.

President Duterte has agreed to accept the endorsement of PDP Laban to run as the ruling party’s candidate in the elections next year.

Cusi said Go’s track record of service, done without much fanfare, speaks for itself.

“We admire your humility, most of all. While some are gloating over their supposed achievements and boasting about their purported qualifications so they may become President, you, on the other hand, refuse the opportunity to become one,” he pointed out.

Because of such qualities, Cusi said that PDP Laban is convinced the party made the right choice in endorsing Go as their candidate for President in the 2022 polls.

In declining his endorsement as the party’s presidential candidate, Go told Cusi that he would prefer to devote his time helping the government and our people overcome the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.

“This includes not just crafting laws but also performing representation and constituency services, particularly by helping those in need, as I have been doing ever since,” said Go.
