Programs cited in SONA ongoing in Bukidnon

MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon (PIA)—The fifth State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA) highlighted the gains of government until Monday, July 27. It also laid out its development plans until President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s term ends some two years away.

Meanwhile, few of the programs as yet planned in the SONA were already ongoing in Bukidnon province.

The cash assistance program for the poor, for instance, has been a monthly activity at the capitol building for some time here. Thousands of folks receive cash grants from the provincial social welfare office regularly.

For their part, the four congressional representatives here have already launched their local version of the social amelioration services at the first sign of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in March yet.

They rushed truckloads of rice, canned goods, sugar, coffee, and noodles to the communities. Everyone was given food. The resupply of food to some who are still in need is sustained.

Bukidnon 3rd District Congressman Manuel “Manoy” Zubiri has his own way of reaching out. In addition to the rice and other food items, he also issued sewing machines to women folk for them to make facemasks. These are issued free to all to protect themselves from COVID-19.

In his district, Zubiri has already distributed 270 units of sewing machines. More of these portable machines were earlier delivered to areas outside the third congressional district like Talakag and Libona towns, and Malaybalay City, which respectively belong to the first and second districts of Bukidnon.

It seems that even if COVID-19 stays for long, the one million or so residents here will never go hungry, for Bukidnon is the food basket in Northern Mindanao. (RLRB/PIA Bukidnon)
