SK Canitoan combats pandemic via urban gardening, webinars

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)–In working towards food security to fight off the adverse effects of coronavirus disease (COVID)-19, Barangay Canitoan Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Chair Nador Jun Datahan said they implement the Urban Container Household Gardening Program of the city and have included such in their six-year plan as well as they conduct various webinars to educate the youth on their roles in the society.

“Gipili namo ang katong mga batan-on nga gaadbokasiya sa agriculture ug kadtong mga batan-on nga hilig mananom kay para pud ma-sustain ang kini nga proyekto,” Datahan said during the CORDS-X Podcast with Communications Sec. Martin Andanar, July 24.

(We chose the youth who advocate on agriculture and those who love to plant so we can sustain this project)

He added that they are thankful to the City Government of Cagayan de Oro for choosing their barangay as one of the recipients of the said program noting that the pandemic caused job loss, food scarcity and hampered movement going to and fro the market area.

Aside from the gardening program, they also conduct the Bahay Ko, Ligtas Ako Challenge, distribute food packs and vegetables to the frontliners as well as they provide care packs to the young parents and youth laborers in Canitoan.

For the upcoming Linggo ng Kabataan, Datahan said they will conduct the #FeedTheKid to combat malnutrition among children. He added that they have coordinated with the Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) to obtain the list of malnourished children in their barangay.

They will also provide vegetable seeds to the parents so the latter can address the nutritional needs of their children through planting.

Furthermore, SK Canitoan will hold the Eat Bulilit Caravan that will benefit all the children in the barangay.

Webinar on food security, environment, education, diplomacy, governance, legislation and health will also be highlighted through their ‘Stay Connected program.’
The SK also plans to further help families in their barangay via Handog Pangkabuhayan where 10 beneficiaries will be given chicken that they could raise or sell.
Datahan urges the youth in their area to follow the SK’s Facebook page so they can be updated on the activities that the federation will conduct amid the pandemic. (RTP/PIA-10)
